Understanding Vial Labels and Dosing Instructions

It’s common to have questions about how the information on your vial compares to your dosing instructions. The guidance below explains how to interpret each and what to follow.

What the vial label shows

Vial labels typically include general information about the medication, such as the concentration, total volume, and route of administration (for example, “subcutaneous injection”).

This information describes the medication in the vial, but it does not indicate the exact amount you should inject for your prescribed dose.

What your prescription instructions show

Your prescribed dose and injection instructions are provided on your prescription label and through your licensed provider.

These instructions include the exact amount to inject and the schedule you should follow based on your individual treatment plan.

Which instructions should you follow

Always follow:

  • The dosing and administration instructions on your prescription label

  • Guidance provided by your licensed provider

Your prescription instructions are the correct reference for how much to take and when.

Important reminder

Do not adjust your dose based on the vial label alone.

If anything appears unclear or does not match what you expected, contact your provider through the Patient Portal before injecting.
